What a Private Montserrat Day Trip Looks Like

A private Montserrat day trip from Barcelona is a full day — around six to seven hours, door to door — to the monastery in the mountains an hour from the city. Your group travels alone, not on a shared coach, with a guide for the day. Barcelona Experience has run these privately since 2003, a licensed travel agency rated 5.0 across more than 100 reviews. We handle the bookings and timing most visitors find hardest — the rack railway, and the boys' choir, which sings only on certain days and books out well ahead. Priced per group, a couple or family travels at a real per-person value.

Where a private Montserrat day actually differs

The mountain is the mountain — every operator drives the same roads to the same monastery. What separates one Montserrat day from another is everything around it.

  • Booked before you go — the rack railway, the basilica, the choir on the days it sings, timed so they line up instead of clashing. Paid in advance, not queued for on arrival.
  • The choir, handled properly — it sings only on certain days and books out well ahead. We tell you straight whether your date works, and build the day around the one o’clock service when it does — most operators leave it to chance.
  • A guide with you all day — from pickup to drop-off, reading your pace and shaping the hours around it. Never a coach to keep up with, never a driver who drops you at the gate.
  • Back when we say — the day is planned to your clock, cruise port or hotel. In 23+ years, no one has ever missed their ship.
  • Run by the same company since 2003 — owner-operated, a fully licensed travel agency, sold direct, never through a reseller.
  • The proof is in the reviews — 5.0 across more than 100, where clients name the day and the people who ran it.

How a day at Montserrat runs

Think of this as the shape of the day, not a fixed schedule. The boys’ choir sings around one o’clock, on the days it sings — and a good day is built backward from that, with room to go at your own pace.

Morning pickup, door to door

Collected from your hotel or the cruise port — the mountain is about an hour out.

Up by rack railway

We take the cremallera up for the final climb: the valley falling away, no winding road, no car-park scramble. (We can drive up if it’s down, or if you’d rather.)

The monastery, at your pace

Time before the Black Madonna, the basilica, and views that run for miles — without being herded.

The choir, if your dates fall right

The Escolania sings only certain weekdays in term, and is away all summer. We’ll tell you honestly whether your dates work.

Lunch after, unhurried

A proper stop, not a rushed bite against the clock.

More, for those who want it

A short walk among the rock formations, or the Sant Joan funicular when it’s running — an hour few day-trippers see.

Back by mid-to-late afternoon

Earlier if your ship needs it.

Montserrat rewards getting the timing right, and the right timing depends on your date: when the choir sings, how busy the mountain is that day, whether you’re starting from a hotel or a cruise ship with a deadline. That’s why we don’t hand you a fixed itinerary, and it’s why a private day beats a coach on a set clock — some operators run a single departure time for everyone; yours starts when it should for your day. Your guide knows the variables and builds around them, so the hours flow instead of leaving you with three empty ones before the choir.

A shorter visit is possible if your time is tight, though with the choir at midday and the drive each way, most people find the full day the one that actually works.

Two ways to make more of the day

Most people find Montserrat is a full day in itself — and honestly, it’s at its best that way. But there are two things worth knowing about before you book.

Add professional photographs of your day

One of our guides is also a professional photographer — so on the days he’s the one leading your tour, your day can be photographed as it happens, as a paid extra. Not posed portraits, but candid, reportage-style images of your group in the place: the climb, the views, the quiet moments, the day as you actually lived it. Real photographs taken by a professional, to keep — rather than phones passed around at arm’s length.

Because it’s one particular guide, it isn’t available on every date — so if it appeals, mention it when you enquire and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s possible for yours. It’s the kind of thing nobody thinks to offer, and few ever forget having.

Or pair it with wine country

If you’d rather make a longer day of it, Montserrat sits close to the Penedès wine country, and the two combine into a single full day — the mountain and the cellars together, in whichever order the day calls for. It’s a lovely combination, though a longer and more expensive one, and in truth each is rich enough to stand on its own. If there’s somewhere else you’ve had in mind, tell us — we can often work it in.

Getting to Montserrat, and getting in

Montserrat looks straightforward from a distance, and isn’t, quite. The rack railway up the mountain, entry to the basilica, the choir when it’s possible — each runs on its own timetable, and more of it has to be booked and paid for ahead every year. We handle that part. You arrive to a day that’s already arranged, in the right order, tickets in hand: no queuing at the foot of the mountain, no working out which connection meets which, no discovering the car park filled up an hour before you got there.

Tickets and entry, handled

Entry to Montserrat — the rack railway, the basilica, and the choir when your dates allow — is arranged and paid for as part of planning your day, so there’s nothing for you to queue for or work out on arrival. A few things worth knowing before you book:

  • Booked to a date and time — entry is tied to the day you travel, so the sooner your dates are settled, the more the day can be built exactly as you’d want it.
  • Paid before we buy — we settle ticket costs in advance, plus a small handling fee, and can only secure what’s still available when payment clears. Earlier is always better, especially in summer.
  • Non-refundable once issued — that’s set by the sites themselves, not by us, and is separate from any terms covering the rest of your day.
  • Groups of ten or more — a different booking route applies, so let us know your group size when you enquire.

The choir, and when it sings

Entry to Montserrat — the rack railway, the basilica, and the choir when your dates allow — is arranged and paid for as part of planning your day, so there’s nothing for you to queue for or work out on arrival. A few things worth knowing before you book:

Arriving by cruise

We collect you at the port and have you back in good time for all-aboard — the day is built backward from your departure, with the margin a cruise day needs. In 23+ years, no one has ever missed their ship.

Booking direct vs the ship's desk

Shore excursions sold on board are run by local operators much like us, with the cruise line’s markup on top and priced per person. Booked direct, the same private day is priced per group — often for less than the on-board fare, and it’s your group only, never a shared coach.

Tell us your dates — we'll tell you what's possible

A day at Montserrat has too many moving parts to fit a booking form, so we don’t run one. Send your dates and a few details, and the person who answers is the one responsible for your day — not a booking engine. You’ve already seen the price; from here it’s a short conversation, not a checkout.

Clear Montserrat day-trip pricing

One price for your group — not per person, and not multiplied by however many of you there are. A private car, your guide for the day, the rack railway up and down, and the day arranged around you, all in.

Private Full Day Tour

From €1,090 per group (up to 4 people)

  • Additional person: €95 per person
  • Maximum group size: 7 people
  • Duration: 6–7 hours

A couple of things sit outside the tour price. We handle both, so you’re not buying tickets at the foot of the mountain or finding a restaurant on the day — but they’re billed separately and honestly:

  • Entry tickets — from €30 per person, including a small service fee. We buy them ahead, hold your spots, and settle with the venue, so you walk in rather than queue. The fee covers that work; we’ll give you the exact figure for your group and date.
  • Lunch — paid directly to the restaurant. We arrange the reservation and the place, but you pay them, not us — it’s never marked up.

A shorter half-day visit is possible if your time is tight, but with the choir around midday and the drive each way, almost everyone finds the full day the one that’s worth making.

That’s the whole picture — base, tickets, lunch — so there are no surprises later. If the price works for you, the next step is simply telling us your dates.

Common Questions Before Booking

Will we get to hear the boys' choir?

Sometimes — and it's worth being honest about this up front. The Escolania sings only on certain weekdays during the school term, and is away through the summer and when the choir tours, so for a good part of the year it isn't possible at all. When your dates do fall in a singing window, tickets are limited and go early. This is the same challenge every Montserrat operator faces — no one can simply guarantee the choir, because it sings to its own calendar. What we can do is tell you straight away whether your dates work, and if they do, move quickly to secure what's available. The sooner we know your dates, the better your chances.

How long is the day?

Around six to seven hours, door to door. Montserrat is about an hour from Barcelona each way, and when the choir is singing it performs around midday, with lunch after — so the day naturally settles into a full one. It's unhurried by design: time at the monastery, the rack railway up and back, a proper lunch, and the drive each way, without racing a clock.

Why isn't there a "book now" button — can I book online?

By choice. A day at Montserrat has too many moving parts to fit a booking form — the choir window, your pickup, your departure, the timing of it all. So instead of a booking engine, you reach a person: you tell us your dates and a few details, we tell you honestly what's possible, and the same people you speak with are the ones responsible for your day. You've already seen the price here, so it's a short conversation, not a checkout — and if anything needs sorting later, you're talking to us directly, not a ticket queue.

Do you pick up from the cruise port?

Yes — we collect you right at the port and plan the day around your all-aboard time, with margin to spare. In more than 23 years, no one has ever missed their ship. If you're sailing, tell us your ship and date and we'll build the day to fit the window comfortably.

What's included, and what will I pay on top?

The tour price is one figure for your group and includes your private car, your guide for the day, the rack railway up and down, and pickup and return. Two things sit outside it, both arranged by us: entry tickets (from around €30 per person, including a small service fee for buying and holding them ahead), and lunch (paid directly to the restaurant, never marked up). That's the whole picture — no surprises later.

Is it suitable for older travellers, or for children?

For most, yes. The rack railway is a big part of why — it carries you up the mountain instead of a long winding drive or a steep climb on foot, so arriving is easy and pleasant for most ages and energy levels. There's gentle walking around the monastery at your own pace. If anyone in your group has specific mobility needs, tell us when you enquire and we'll shape the day around them.

Can we combine Montserrat with wine country?

You can — Montserrat pairs with the Penedès wine country into a single longer day. It's a lovely combination, though a longer and more expensive one, and in all honesty each is rich enough to stand on its own. Most people find Montserrat a full day in itself. If you'd like to combine them, or had somewhere else in mind, just tell us.
