What a Couples or Engagement Session in Barcelona Looks Like

Gaston Magrinat has photographed couples, pre-wedding sessions and surprise proposals in Barcelona and Catalonia since 2003, rated 5.0 across more than 100 reviews. A session runs two, three or four hours and is priced flat for the group rather than per person, from €465, with a car and driver addable for locations beyond walking distance. Directed but candid: guided into real moments rather than posed for the camera. Most photographers cap the images delivered; ninety is a floor, delivered edited within seven days in a private gallery.

Most of the couples I photograph are here for a few days and want one afternoon of it kept properly — engaged, just married, here for pre-wedding photographs, on honeymoon, or about to ask. It’s the same session either way, and it’s planned the same way.

Booking an Engagement Session From Another Country

You are hiring someone you have never met, to be somewhere at a fixed hour, on a day you cannot move, in a city you may not have set foot in yet. I would want to know a few things first too. I’m a native English and Spanish speaker, so at least none of it gets lost in translation.

You won't be my first couple

Whatever the day does — the light goes, the square is shut, one of you is stiff for the first twenty minutes — it has happened before, and I already know what to do with it.

A registered company, not a direct message

Barcelona Experience is a licensed, insured travel agency, GC-002877. You get a written confirmation and an invoice, and a company standing behind the booking. That matters more than it sounds when you are paying in advance to someone you have only messaged.

The same person edits them

I take the photographs and I edit them. Nobody else opens the files. What I was framing on the day is what arrives in your gallery — which is why the sets above look like one hand rather than several.

If the day doesn't go to plan, we change it

Flights land late, weather does what it wants, plans move. Tell me and we work it out — a different day if the calendar allows, a different start time, a different route. And rain isn’t the end of a session: wet stone throws light back, an umbrella is a good prop, and a flat grey sky is the cleanest background there is.

Where We Go, and When

Most sessions stay in one district and we walk it — there’s more in a neighbourhood than people expect. But Barcelona isn’t small. If you want the old city and the hills above it in the same afternoon, we add a car and driver and it stops being a question.

The famous ones, and the ones I keep quiet

If you want Park Güell, the Sagrada Família or the Gothic Quarter, we’ll do them properly — they’re famous for a reason. Most of my favourite places aren’t, and I’d rather not turn them into a list: somewhere everyone has read about doesn’t stay quiet for long. Tell me your date, how long you have, and what you want the pictures to feel like, and I’ll bring you the two or three that fit.

We work with the light we get

A two- or four-hour session can’t wait for perfect light, and it doesn’t need to. Some hours are kinder than others — early morning and late afternoon usually are — but there are good photographs in all of them. Anyone can shoot in golden hour. Knowing what to do at two in the afternoon is the job.

The season matters more than the hour

In high summer the middle of the day is hard, so we start earlier or finish later. In winter the sun stays low and most of the day works. If your dates aren’t fixed yet, that’s worth a message before they are.

Other people are a condition, not a problem

The famous places are busy, and I won’t promise you an empty city in August. A long lens throws the background out. A crowd in front becomes foreground. Often the two of you standing still while the city moves is the photograph.

Further out, if you want it

Less often, couples want a session away from the city — Montserrat, the wine country, Costa Brava. That’s a longer day and quoted as one, but it’s doable.

Park Güell needs a ticket, and we buy it

Park Güell has no free zone any more, so photographing there means a ticket, and it’s timed entry that sells out weeks ahead in summer. We buy it for you, bill it separately, and build the session around the slot. You don’t have to work any of it out.

The full day, if you want one

Some couples make the session part of a whole day — often the ones here for pre-wedding photographs, with the wedding itself happening at home. I book the salon with the beautician I work with — hair, makeup or both, for one of you or for both — which runs about two to two and a half hours depending on what you’re having done. Most photographers here don’t offer this at all.

The car collects you, waits, and takes you on from there. On a day like that there’s usually an assistant with me as well. The car is also the base for the rest of the day: wardrobe changes happen out of it, and flowers, shoes, anything else you want in the pictures travels in it. It means the day isn’t limited to what you can carry or walk between — and it’s why a full day works at all.

Planning a Surprise Proposal

If you’re reading this on your own, you’re deciding something you can’t test first, in a city you may not know, for the one person you can’t ask. That’s most of the proposals I photograph. There’s no single way to do it well — but there is always a plan, and we make it together.

Before you fly

We settle the spot, the time and the exact place you’ll stop — by message, well before you land. And a second spot, in case the first one is closed, packed, or dug up. You’ll have a photograph of me, so there’s no moment where you’re scanning a square wondering. If there’s time, we can meet at the location beforehand and walk it through — where you’ll come from, where I’ll be, what happens after.

On the day

I’m in position before you get there, and you can reach me right up to the moment. Late flight, changed mind, she wants to sit down for a coffee first — tell me and we move. Nothing has to go to plan for this to work.

How close I am is your call

Shooting a proposal live is intrusive by nature. Too close and you can feel it — and the last thing either of you needs in that minute is more pressure. Too far and the pictures aren’t of anything. Where I stand comes out of the place: on a terrace or a hillside I can hold back; inside a restaurant I can’t, the light will be poor, and a flash is probably coming. There are trade-offs in every version of this, and I’d rather you knew about them beforehand than discovered them afterwards.

The plan is the product

Most of what I’m doing before you arrive is thinking about what could go differently — where the sun will be, whether the terrace is reserved, what happens if she stops to look at something on the way. You won’t have thought of most of it, and you shouldn’t have to. What you should know is that it has been thought about, and that nothing on the day will be the first time I’ve dealt with it.

None of it comes as a package

Flowers, champagne, a boat, horses, a violinist — none of that is in my price, and I’d be wary of anyone selling it as a package. It’s your proposal, not a scene we run. Say what you want in it and I’ll help you arrange it during the planning; if you want none of it, that’s a real answer too.

And then it’s a session

Most people book two hours, so the day doesn’t stop at the yes. You’ve both just had the biggest ten minutes of your year and you’re standing in Barcelona. That’s the best you’ll ever photograph together.

What it costs, and why it starts at two hours

A proposal begins with the two-hour session — there’s no shorter version. I’m in place well before you are, and then we wait, because she arrives when she arrives. That still leaves the better part of an hour of shooting once it’s happened, which is more than enough for this. The supplement on top is for the planning rather than the photographing: the scouting, the second location, the timing. The figure is with the prices below.

Message me before you lock anything else in. The date and the place are what everything else has to fit around.

How Pricing Works

You already have hundreds of pictures of each other, and some of them are good. What you don’t have is a day of someone’s work.

The shoot is the short part. Two hours produces several hundred frames, and going through them, choosing, and editing the ones that survive is a full day at minimum. That’s most of what you’re paying for — and it’s why the cheap end of this market delivers twenty images. Twenty is one evening’s editing.

So nothing is rationed here. At least ninety images from any session, often well past a hundred and fifty on the longest ones — every frame worth keeping, edited properly. Ninety is a floor, not a target. There’s no cap, because a cap protects the price, not you.

A car and driver is €300 for any session up to four hours — the same figure whether you use it for one crossing or all afternoon. Beyond four hours, or out of the city, it’s quoted.

A proposal is €120 on top, and starts from the two-hour session.

All prices include VAT and are for your whole group, not per person.

Everything else is quoted — a full day, a session out at Montserrat, the wine country or the Costa Brava, or anything with more people than a car holds. Salon and entrance tickets are paid direct to them, at their price.

Questions, answered

How far ahead should we book?

As early as you can, especially for spring and autumn dates. If the session includes Park Güell, entry is timed and sells out weeks ahead in summer, so the date decides the ticket rather than the other way around. Shorter notice is sometimes possible — ask, and I'll tell you straight away.

Can we photograph inside the Sagrada Família?

We photograph it from outside. Their policy on photography inside is restrictive, and getting a couple through security and around the interior eats most of a short session for very little in return. From the square opposite, with the right light, it's one of the best backdrops in the city.

What if one of us hates being photographed?

That's more common than the other way round, and it's usually sorted within the first twenty minutes. I don't stand in front of you asking for expressions. We walk, you talk to each other, and I work around you — most people forget I'm there long before they expected to.

What should we wear?

Whatever you'd wear to be yourselves — that's what the photographs should look like. The one thing I'd steer you away from is busy patterns, which pull the eye off your faces and fight with tiled and stone backgrounds. Bring a second option if you'd like, and tell me what you're wearing beforehand so I can pick locations that suit it. With a car, changes happen out of it.

Can we bring other people?

Yes — parents, siblings, a friend to carry the flowers, a dog. It doesn't change the price. The only real limit is the car: nine seats, which means up to seven of you plus me and the driver. More than that and it's a quote.

Can you arrange hair and makeup?

Yes — I book the salon I work with and slot it into the day. You pay them directly, at their price, and I don't add anything to it.

What happens to our photographs?

The gallery is private and yours to share or not. Separately, I may use images from the session in my portfolio and on this site — that's the default, and if you'd rather I didn't, tell me beforehand and I won't. No reason needed. For a proposal, nothing appears anywhere until you've told me the news is out.
