How to get the most
out of a visit by
family and friends

Paris. Barcelona. Rome. Berlin. London.

When you move to a city beloved by the travel world, one of the unspoken rules is that your friends and your family will have a renewed interest in visiting you (and your amazing city). And, at some point, you are bound to hear these magic words: “We’re coming to visit!”

Adjusting the schedule of your daily life to become an unofficial tour guide can wreak havoc on your energy, patience, and peace. That’s why Barcelona Experience is here to help. We specialize in coordinating and planning experiences that keep everyone happy, rested, and immersed in the best of Barcelona.

Here are a few ways we help you and your guests have the best experience possible in your city:

1. Know Your Guests

Every person is different. Some of us are walker gawkers… we can spend hours strolling through a new city as we cast wonder-filled glances at anything remotely interesting. Others are first-burst travelers; we like to rise early, hit the streets when we have energy, then return home by afternoon to savor the sights as we relax the night away.

Your guests are no different. When Barcelona Experience plans your visit, we take the time to understand your travelers—their energy level, pace, and preferences. High-energy travelers want to squeeze every last bit of culture out of a new place. Ten sites in one day? No problem! On the other hand, low-energy travelers may prefer visiting two or three places and calling it a day.

If your visitors like to explore until the sun comes up, we’ll make sure their itinerary gives them the space to do just that, by choosing neighborhoods and routes that let them discover Barcelona on their own terms.

If they prefer to keep things calm and manageable, we’ll plan around smaller areas or key attractions where they can take their time, such as La Sagrada Família or the MNAC.

And because we manage the details, we can adjust day-to-day, checking in with guests, reviewing the next day’s itinerary, and making sure everyone feels comfortable and excited about what’s ahead.

2. Know your schedule

“Now what?” It’s a dreaded question for any traveler or host to hear. Sitting around waiting for direction can quickly deflate the excitement of a trip.

That’s why Barcelona Experience helps create structured, easy-to-follow itineraries that balance fun, rest, and exploration.

An itinerary, or lack thereof, can make or break your guests’ experiences in your amazing city, but we’ve got you covered.

One of the easiest ways to plan a great itinerary is to break the city into genre-specific sections, sometimes based on location and sometimes on theme.

For example, a first full day might include a walking trip through the Gothic Quarter, Las Ramblas, La Boqueria Market, and Plaza Catalunya.

Other days can be built around themes, like a Barcelona history day with a walking tour through the Old City, or a Gaudí day focused on his most iconic works.

We also love including smaller adventures or mini-trips throughout your stay, such as a visit to Barceloneta, home to some of the city’s best bakeries and tapas bars, or an evening exploring Gràcia, a trendy neighborhood filled with cool cafés and a wealth of cool bars.

Pub and restaurant crawls are another fun way to experience the city. Choose a neighborhood, and as you walk, let someone in the group pick the next stop. It’s a great way to explore new places while keeping things spontaneous.

A variation of this is the subway crawl. Pick a subway line, bring dice or cards numbered one through five, and when you enter the station, choose someone to roll or draw a card. The number that turns up is the number of stops before getting off to find the next spot. Some places will be quiet, others will be amazing—and that’s part of the fun.

By helping plan ahead and adding a bit of creativity, Barcelona Experience makes sure every day in the city feels effortless, exciting, and memorable for everyone involved.

3. Know Your Limits

You know the look. Jet-lagged travelers near the end of their trip, eyes stained red from lack of sleep, blisters like volcanoes erupting from their heels, and an overall tired haze fought off only by a steady stream of coffee and weird European energy drinks.

The truth is, your guests won’t be the only ones who feel that way. Playing the part of guide, hotelier, and housekeeper can be just as exhausting as taking a red-eye from San Diego to London. If you aren’t cooking, you’re cleaning. If you aren’t cleaning, you’re coaxing your group through the metro, streets, and sidewalks of your city. That’s why Barcelona Experience helps balance your itinerary, making sure there’s a mix of excitement and rest for everyone.

We help plan ahead so that meals, transportation, and activities all flow easily. If you’re planning to cook, we recommend making meals earlier in the visit. For example, one of our clients cooked dinner the first four nights, then ate out the last three, a simple change that made the week much more enjoyable. This small scheduling trick gives you a break from the kitchen when you’ll be most tired.

If your guests are foodies, we can also arrange a visit to one of Barcelona’s neighborhood markets, offering a dazzling display of fruits, vegetables and meats that may not be so readily available back home. It’s a fun way to slow down, connect, and experience the city like a local. Leading a trip to a market where food-loving visitors can select exotic or not-so-exotic fare for the evening’s dinner can be a memorable experience for them.

We also like to include a free day at the end of every itinerary. This gives guests a chance to return to their favorite neighborhoods or sites while you enjoy a quiet, restful day at home. By pacing each trip thoughtfully, Barcelona Experience helps ensure everyone finishes their visit feeling fulfilled, not fatigued.

4. Know Your City

At Barcelona Experience, we know how important it is to be prepared. That’s why we help you stay ahead with all the details that make hosting or planning a visit easier.

Create a bookmarks folder with websites of Barcelona’s famous and not-so-famous sites. Know the opening and closing schedules. Nothing is more frustrating than hyping a particular location, only to arrive there in time to see the doors close and lights go out. We make sure you have the most up-to-date information so your plans stay on track.

Know the iconic restaurants and bars in each neighborhood, as well as bits of history and humor. If you ever find yourself in a location you didn’t plan on visiting, that little bit of extra knowledge can help you make quick decisions about what to see or where to eat.

Compile a list of free activities in the city. If your guests spend more than they expected during the first half of their trip, a frugal-day itinerary will be a lifesaver.ç

We also recommend looking into passes or family tickets that can save everyone money. For example, La Sagrada Familia offers an annual family pass that includes two adults, two children under 18, and two free passes for about 35€. Two individual passes normally cost about 30€. Splitting the cost gives both you and your guests a great deal and added flexibility. We know of and can help you find these deals.

We can also help you estimate how many metro trips your guests will need to take.

Knowing this ahead of time makes it easy to suggest the right pass. For example, during one family’s visit, we calculated around 46 metro, bus, or tram trips based on their schedule. Recommending a 70-journey metro card saved them time, money, and stress.

A little bit of planning with Barcelona Experience offers your guests a sense of structure and direction, gives you moments of rest and relaxation, and makes the entire experience more enjoyable for everyone. Ready to explore with Barcelona Experience?
